My English Rendering of the poems from Cecília Meireles’ “Cânticos”, Translated by Rodolpho Miranda
Purpose
This is a personal project involving the translation of poems from the book “Cânticos” by Cecília Meireles, undertaken by Rodolpho Miranda. It is a non-profit endeavour. The project presents an English-language interpretation of the author's 26 canticles, created by a devoted admirer of her work.
The Book
Although the 26 poems date back to around 1927, they were published posthumously in 1981 by Editora Moderna. They were later republished in 2015 by Global Editora — Cânticos; ISBN-10: 8526021931; ISBN-13: 978-8526021938.
Flashcards
The poems are presented in pairs: the original poem on one side, alongside my interpretation/translation into English on the other side. Each pair is framed over an open-source texture from the internet – where I don’t remember I took from! –, to which I applied a custom colour using Photoshop. At the centre, dividing the two poems, is an engraving of Cecília Meireles’ face, drawn by the Hungarian painter Árpád Szenes.
