Cybersecurity Goes Beyond Personal Data or Cryptocurrencies.

The widespread use of low-cost genomic sequencing technologies has opened up a  feasible possibility to sequence and analyze whole genomes quickly and at low costs. Large scale DNA sequence has resulted in vast amounts of genomic data fostering advancements in human health through the identification of genes and molecular mechanisms related to different diseases, including many types of cancer, allergies, or other disorders. Emerging technologies, such as big data analysis and cloud computing have provided efficient strategies for the storage and manipulation of the information generated by genomic studies. However, there exists a critical gap in this area - the insufficient protection of this information with the required rigor. Cybersecurity is often overlooked in these applications, posing a potential threat. In response, genomic cybersecurity emerges as a crucial solution, safeguarding organizations against data misuse that could compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of such sensitive data. In addition, may proportionate secure collaborative innovations among multiple parties such as corporations, universities and government institutions. According to Arshad et al. (2021), this presents a huge opportunity for future work. The theft of DNA and genomic data carries severe implications  for genetic privacy, identity theft, medical and social implications, as well as national risks. Recognizing and addressing these challenges through enhanced cybersecurity measures is important to ensure the responsible and secure advancement of genomic research.
